The word Turquoise is derived from the French word turquois meaning “Turkish” and dates back to
the 14 th century. The mineral was first brought to Europe through the Ottoman Empire.
Persian turquoise mined near the modern city of Nishapur in Iran has been used as a reference for
evaluating turquoise quality to this day.
